Stargon™ SS Shielding Gas Blend

Moving From a Helium Gas Blend Results in More Inches Welded Per Hour

Even under the most challenging conditions, Stargon SS gas blend can help you produce high-quality welds with very light surface oxide and improved color matching. While it can be used in a number of heavy applications like truck bodies, Stargon SS gas blend really excels on thin materials because, without helium, it provides a lower heat input, reducing the chance for burnthrough or distortion, while reducing costs. All of which makes it the ideal choice for joining thin gauge stainless in the food service industry and for architectural applications where minimal distortion and appearance are critical.

What other advantages are there to this argon-based blend? To start, Stargon SS gas blend operates at flow rates that are up to 50 percent lower than the helium-based trimix, which translates into about 20 percent more product per cylinder. Its enhanced weldability provides good arc stability and less post-weld cleanup, saving even more time and energy. And its unique formulation makes it a versatile performer well suited for all-position welding using short circuit, spray and pulsed spray transfer modes. How does Stargon SS gas blend stack up against others? “When compared to most other commonly used blends, the Stargon SS gas blend reduces spatter and fume, eliminates residual slag, increases welder productivity, decreases overwelding and increases travel speeds,” says Robert Schaefer, National Marketing Manager at Praxair. “What’s more, it offers exceptional cost savings when compared with the helium-based mixtures currently used today.” The following graphs tells the story of its bottom-line benefits.

Typical Uses for Stargon SS Shielding Gas Blend

  • Automotive applications: provides excellent appearance with minimum spatter and reduced post-weld cleanup such as in pulsed and spray welding of dump truck bodies
  • Food services industry: joining thin gauge stainless when bead shape is important
  • Architectural applications: achieve minimal distortion and ideal appearance
  • Thin gauge applications: when projects require low base material distortion

On Every Point, Stargon SS Gas Blend Offers Exceptional Value

  • Contains no helium and can be used with lower flow rates, so it helps users reduce costs
  • In short circuit transfer mode, it performs well, providing higher deposition rates and improved weldability
  • Provides high-quality welds with a light surface oxide and improved color matching over A1025 – when followed by proper pickling and passivating (with Praxair’s ProStar™ Elimitint™ P&P heat tint remover), weld appearance is nearly indistinguishable from A1025
  • A versatile blend that can be used for short circuit transfer, spray transfer and pulsed spray transfer modes, in all positions
  • Controlled CO2 content makes it an ideal choice when welding austenitic stainless steels where weld metal carbon control is required
  • As a nitrogen-enhanced shielding gas, it provides good arc stability, weld penetration and reduced distortion
  • Excels on thinner materials, providing lower heat input, minimal spatter, high travel speeds, reduced distortion and a desired weld bead shape
